Day 1:

Arrival and Orientation

Meet at Iquitos airport , travel to Nauta by van 1 ½ hours where we board 30’ covered boat and cruise  1 hour down the Maranon River to the Ucayali River meet to form the headwaters of the Amazon, 1 ½ hours down the Amazon to the Yanayacu River, 1 hour up the Yanayacu to Amazon Refuge with lunch onboard.  At the mouth of the Yanayacu you are likely to see the pink dolphins as you wind up the black water river it is increasingly teaming with wildlife especially birds including hawks, Caracara, kingfishers, herons and hundreds of egrets.   Once you pass the local village of San Juan de Yanayacu you begin to see a higher canopy in the primary forest and here you are likely to see monkeys, sloths, coatimundi (member of anteater family) and the river is full of fish.  You are greeted on arrival with a local fruit juice and given an orientation.

Day 2:

Breakfast, Boxed Lunch, Dinner

Explore and Relax

You may elect to take 1 hour guided hike behind the lodge to Chingana lake where you may have the chance to see white faced owl monkeys, the threatened species of pheasant, the Wattled Curassow which is only found in this region.  Dinner is served at 6 pm, prepared by experienced cook who can cater to your dietary needs.  After dinner you may be entertained by local musicians that often work with us who play guitar, Cajon and sing traditional and popular music or you have the option to take an night paddle in kayaks or dugout motorized canoe to see the creatures of the night, tarantulas, praying mantis, and night monkeys.

Day 3:

Early Dugout Float Down the YanaYacu, Visit Oxbow Lakes

Option for early 6:00 am float in the dugouts or kayaks down the Yanayacu to look for wildlife.  Visit Oxbow Lakes and then return to lodge for breakfast.  After breakfast you paddle up river on the Yana yacu where you will find a giant Ceiba tree 50’ wide at the base and along the way.  We get to an area of high ground where you are provided rubber boots for hike to learn about local medicinal plants and herbs.

Return to the lodge for lunch and refreshment.  After lunch, siesta.  In the late afternoon we visit the community of San Juan de Yanayacu where you get to meet, Jorge the local Shaman and if you buy him a beer he will share his wealth of knowledge and some of his home brew if you are brave. There are some local crafts to buy, baskets, beaded necklaces and weavings.  We take time to stop at the lake across from the village for Amazon sunset.

Dinner usually includes fresh fish or chicken, rice, the local heart of  palm, vegetables and local fruit juices.  After dinner you are musically  entertained or night walk or just relax as the schedule at Amazon Refuge is flexible and you never feel pushed to participate if you just want to chill out and enjoy the sounds of the jungle which get loud at night.

Day 4:

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Kayak or Dugout Canoes to Chingana Lake

Early breakfast at 6am.  Paddle kayaks or dugout canoes to Chingana Lake which is only accessible from Chingana Creek which flows under the bridge and observation platform Amazon Refuge.   45 minutes paddle takes you to the Chingana Lake which has a wide variety of water fowl, hawks, prehistoric looking hoatzin,  caracara, patu, tanagers and the threatened Wattled Curassow found only in the Yanayacu.  I addition to birds you may see the white faced night monkey, capuchins, saddleback tamarind,  spider and squirrel monkeys.  Across the lake you may see the giant paiche fish or anaconda.  Return to the lodge for lunch followed by an afternoon siesta.  In the late afternoon we venture downriver look for monkeys, sloths and birds.  There are also ocelots and jaguars in this area but they are seldom seen by day.   Return to the lodge in time to rest and shower before dinner.  After dinner you are treated to stories of legends in the Amazon.

Day 5:


Return to Iquitos via Boat and Van

Return to Iquitos.
